The ECOWAS Heads of State and Government have unanimously agreed to respond to the unconstitutional government takeover in Niger with military and financial actions. Omar Touray, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, revealed this decision after an extraordinary meeting in Abuja. If the military junta fails to reinstate President Bazoum within one week, the ECOWAS will take military action against them. Additionally, all land and air borders between ECOWAS nations and Niger will be closed, and the junta, its officials, and families will face a travel ban and financial restrictions within the region. President Bola Tinubu was commended for his resolute leadership, urging everyone to uphold democracy and support the restoration of President Bazoum to power as the legitimate representative of the Nigerien people.
