The military intervention in Niger has created tension throughout the West African sub-region, drawing international attention to our neighboring country.

The increasing number of states experiencing military intervention in the subregion over the past three years adds to the concerns surrounding the current situation.

Nigeria, as the regional leader, is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing the political leadership crisis in Niger and working towards the restoration of democratic governance in the country.

While the expectations on Nigeria are not easy to fulfill, commendation must be given to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for its efforts in addressing the crisis so far.

As ECOWAS continues its efforts to reinstate democracy in Niger, it is crucial that military hostilities are avoided, as they may worsen the situation.

The crisis in Niger requires diplomatic engagement, with sustained channels for dialogue being essential.

Nigeria is expected to take a leading role in the peaceful conflict resolution process, while the military insurrectionists in Niger must understand that the world cannot wait indefinitely for a reasonable resolution to the crisis.

This is undoubtedly a challenging time for the West African region, but any actions taken to resolve the crisis must prioritize democracy as the ultimate victor.
