Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), revealed that President Bola Tinubu informed labor union leaders about his choice to reside in a two-bedroom apartment as part of efforts to curtail the expenses of governance.

Ajaero disclosed this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today. He recalled that the organized labor had recently halted its nationwide protest against the removal of petrol subsidy after a meeting with the president.

Ajaero elaborated, “During our discussion with the president, we raised concerns about the excessive costs associated with governance. We conveyed our reservations about the cascading effect of appointing ministers, who in turn appoint Special Assistants, and the subsequent appointment of additional Assistants by the SSAs. The president responded by urging us to consider the employment opportunities created by such appointments. However, we did not fully agree with that perspective.”

“He presented his own situation as an example. He shared that he had reduced the size of his car fleet, but was told it was a security matter. He also mentioned his preference for using his private jet, but was informed that security necessitates the use of the government jet. Furthermore, he mentioned that he resides in a two-bedroom flat and is making efforts to economize, intending to communicate this principle to his team. I’m unsure about the implications of this,” Ajaero concluded.
