Segun Sowunmi, a notable figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has declared his intention to contest against former Senate President Bukola Saraki for the party’s National Chairmanship. Sowunmi confidently expressed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. Despite Saraki’s speculated candidacy, Sowunmi, a former gubernatorial aspirant in Ogun state, asserted his capability to win the battle. He intends to challenge Saraki regarding his actions during the party’s destabilization in 2014/2015. Sowunmi also criticized the notion of having another North Central leader as party chairman, deeming it unfair to the South-West region. Notably, there have been six North Central and a total of 15 PDP chairmen. Umar Damagum, the current acting PDP National Chairman, expressed the South-West’s aspiration for the position during a party retreat, emphasizing the contributions made by different regions.
