Resident Bola Tinubu has been given until August 23 to provide compelling reasons why Chicago State University (CSU) should not be compelled to release his academic records to his rival, Atiku Abubakar, who contested against him in the February 25 Nigerian presidential election. This information is derived from court documents obtained by Peoples Gazette.

This deadline, imposed on August 9, was set by Jeffrey Gilbert, the newly appointed magistrate judge overseeing the case at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago.

Earlier this month, Abubakar had sought court approval to subpoena Mr. Tinubu’s records from CSU, based on the belief that these documents would help resolve significant inconsistencies in Tinubu’s background. Publicly available documents indicated that CSU admitted a female student named Bola Tinubu in the 1970s, born on March 29, 1954. However, the Nigerian president had claimed to be born on March 29, 1952, and had also previously listed 1954 as his birth year. Furthermore, he had recently removed details of his primary and secondary education from his records after it was revealed that the schools he mentioned during his 1999 run for Lagos governor did not exist in Nigeria. Abubakar aimed to use the requested records to establish the academic records Tinubu submitted to CSU before his enrollment in the accounting program.

Following Abubakar’s court application for the records, Tinubu swiftly filed a motion to oppose the request, citing a U.S. privacy law pertaining to students.

Nevertheless, the court demonstrated interest in moving the case forward, especially after Abubakar argued that the court had valid jurisdiction. Consequently, the judge established a deadline for Tinubu to present his arguments by August 23, regarding why CSU should withhold his records from Abubakar. Court filings indicate this development.
