The newly appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed his intention to enforce the Abuja masterplan by demolishing buildings that violate its guidelines. Speaking at a press conference in Garki, Abuja, shortly after being inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, Mr. Wike conveyed a strong message to those responsible for distorting the city’s planned development.

He firmly stated, “Regrettably, for those who have constructed buildings in disregard of the designated zones, the consequences will be significant. Any structures erected in prohibited areas will face demolition.”

Mr. Wike emphasized the imperative of adhering to the Abuja master plan during the city’s expansion. He underscored that individuals who develop within the city’s green spaces would risk losing their properties to the wrecking ball.

“In the event that one holds animosity towards preserving greenery, it’s tantamount to self-detriment. Therefore, if anyone has appropriated green zones or transformed parks into eateries, such encroachments will not be tolerated. They will be subject to demolition. I apologize for any inconvenience,” he remarked.

Addressing the inadequate environmental hygiene within the vicinity of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Wike expressed concern over the accumulation of waste across different parts of the nation’s capital. He questioned the efficacy of the agency responsible for waste clearance.

Mr. Wike also commented on individuals who have been granted land allocations but have yet to develop the plots. He pledged to revoke licenses from such individuals and promptly offer the land to those willing to initiate development.

Furthermore, he indicated that his administration would adopt a firm stance against non-payment of ground rent and would rescind licenses from defaulters.

Mr. Wike disclosed his intention to limit project durations to one year during his tenure. He stressed that he would be personally involved in project inspection and approval from his office.
