On Tuesday, the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) took the decision to suspend its candidate in the February 25 Presidential election, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and another member due to alleged acts against the party’s interests.

This suspension is set to be effective for an initial period of six months. The BoT made this announcement during a press briefing held in Lagos. Alongside this, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) was also suspended.

It’s important to note that the party’s NWC had previously announced the suspension of the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, and the National Publicity Secretary on August 24.

During the special general assembly held at Rockview Hotels in Apapa, Lagos, members of the party voted via voice for these suspensions. The meeting saw the appointment of new national officers, with Dr. Agbo Major becoming the acting National Chairman and Mr. Ogini Olaposi as acting National Secretary, alongside 18 other appointments.

In his statement to the press after the meeting, BoT Secretary Babayo Abdulahi accused Kwankwaso of engaging with President Bola Tinubu, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi without proper authorization from the board. As a result, Kwankwaso’s position as the NNPP national leader was revoked by the board.

Abdulahi also noted that the purported suspension of the NNPP founder went against the party’s constitution and that the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM), and National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) was invalidated by the NWC’s actions.

Furthermore, Abdulahi stated, “The BoT decided that material evidence in the public sector affirmed that Kwankwaso was involved in anti-party activities in various meetings, suggesting political discussions with the President, Atiku, and Obi without authorization from the board. This has earned him a six-month suspension pending the outcome of the investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.”

The acting chairman also expressed the intention of his team to heal the divisions caused by the suspended NWC members and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its people-oriented ideology.

The special general assembly meeting was attended by the new NWC members and party members from all around the country.
