Bloomberg has reported that General Brice Oligui Nguema has assumed the role of the latest head of state in Gabon following the ousting of President Ali Bongo. The appointment of General Brice Oligui Nguema as Gabon’s new leader comes after soldiers in the country took action on Wednesday, August 30. They appointed the head of the republican guard to lead the OPEC member state, effectively replacing deposed President Bongo. The military’s actions also included placing Bongo under house arrest and nullifying the election results through which he had secured a third term. According to Reuters, General Nguema will take on the position of transitional president, as relayed in a statement broadcast on Gabon’s state television in the capital city, Libreville, on Wednesday, August 30.
