In response to the recent coup in Gabon, the African Union (AU) has suspended Gabon’s membership. The AU’s Peace and Security Council strongly condemned the military takeover that removed President Ali Bongo and announced the suspension of Gabon’s participation in all AU activities and institutions. This suspension will remain in effect until constitutional order is restored in the country. Gabon joins Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, and Sudan, which have also been suspended due to coups in their respective countries. Additionally, the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, rejected the use of force and called for peaceful, inclusive dialogue to uphold the rule of law and democracy in Gabon. The military in Gabon seized power, dissolved state institutions, annulled recent election results, and closed the country’s borders, naming Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema as the interim leader.
