The Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria’s secret police, has apprehended Wale Adedayo, the Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area in Ogun State. Adedayo’s arrest occurred in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Friday evening, as confirmed by SaharaReporters.

His detention follows his allegations against Governor Dapo Abiodun of withholding over N17 billion in statutory Federal Allocation meant for the state’s local governments over the past two years. Additionally, Governor Abiodun had initiated an impeachment process against Adedayo in the local government, which Adedayo claimed was orchestrated.

In a letter addressed to former governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Adedayo accused Governor Abiodun of instructing Akibu Efele, Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in the state, and members of the Black Axe confraternity in Ijebu Ode to harm him. He stated that there had been no federal allocation to local government areas in the state since they assumed office in 2021.

Adedayo implored Osoba to intervene urgently and persuade Abiodun to ensure that the statutory federal allocation to local governments in Ogun State aligns with the 1999 Constitution. He alleged that the practice of denying local governments their rightful federal allocations began during the tenure of former governor Ibikunle Amosun.

However, Governor Abiodun denied these allegations, asserting that his administration had augmented the funds allocated to local governments to assist council chairmen in meeting their obligations. The governor clarified that local government funds were managed by the constitutionally recognized Joint Account and Allocation Committee.
