The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, announced during a press conference on Tuesday that the modular refinery at the Abia Industrial Innovation Park is scheduled to become operational by 2025. This development, according to Mr. Kanu, marks a significant milestone as the first major project in the park, and it is anticipated to be fully functional by 2025.

During the conference held at the Government House, Umuahia, Mr. Kanu highlighted that the refinery is expected to generate 2,000 direct jobs and numerous indirect employment opportunities for the youth in Abia. Emphasizing the importance of the project, he mentioned that it will not only supply refined products to the people of Abia but also contribute to the state’s revenue. The commissioner stressed the government’s commitment to meeting the set timeline for the project, underscoring its eagerness to benefit from the state’s petroleum and mineral resources.

Mr. Kanu further noted a substantial interest from investors, particularly in the petroleum sector, expressing optimism that these investments would positively impact Abia’s economic and developmental landscape by enhancing job creation. Additionally, the Commissioner for Petroleum and Minerals, Prof. Joel Ogbonna, emphasized that the establishment of the Abia Industrial Innovation Park demonstrates the government’s dedication to transforming the state.

Prof. Ogbonna elaborated on the government’s comprehensive approach to exploring the entire value chain of petroleum and highlighted the potential of the modular refinery to significantly boost job creation and drive transformation within the state. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to harness the wealth of over 17 solid minerals in Abia for the state’s benefit.
